HW - All Periods

Period 1 - Make sure your notecards are DONE for all three vocab units.  I will be checking for cards, and there will be an assessment on Wednesday.

Periods 3 & 4 - Click HERE for your Active Reading Assignment for Chapters 10-15.  This will be due on 10/8 or 10/9 (depending when we have you).  (Period 3 - remember that you have your Vocab Test #1 test corrections due on Monday.  For each incorrect answer, write out the correct word and its definition five times each.  For misspelled words, write out the word ten times.  You will need to attach your corrections in FRONT of your test.)

Periods 2, 5, and 6 - You will finish your discursive essay.  Do not take more than 45 minutes, and do not use any resources to help you.  You will also have your second vocab test on Monday/Tuesday.  We are also beginning to collect money for The Scarlet Letter.  It's $5, and it's the SAT version of the book.  :)

We love you!!!!  SMILE :)

Homework Update

Periods 3 & 4 - You will be reading Chapters 8 & 9, and you must also finish your bookmarks.  Be sure to study for your vocab quiz.  The main focus will be your Unit 2 words, but you should also study Unit 1.  Our vocab tests are cumulative.  (Period 3 - Remember to bring back the quizzes you had to grade!!!)

Periods 2, 5, and 6 - You will read Chapter 5 of your novel.  You will also need to do test corrections. If you did not get your test back, be sure to see us today, tomorrow, or Thursday.  For each word you misspelled, you will rewrite it CORRECTLY TEN times.  For each question you got wrong in the juxtapose, SAT, poem, and visual sections, you will write the word and definition of the  CORRECT answer FIVE times.

If you are coming to help with the book room, the times have changed a little.  It's from 7:30-10:30 a.m.  If you are coming in the afternoon, we won't be here.  We have a meeting at 11 a.m. off-campus.  Don't worry, we will have another day you can come :)   Sorry for the inconvenience.

SMILE :)  We love you!

Pictures, Grade Change Forms, and HW for Periods 3 & 5

All Classes:   To the right, towards the top, there is a link list for ALL CLASSES.  Click on the Grade Change Form to print them.  You will use these when there is an error in grading :)  Keep them in your binder, and turn one in (with the appropriate documentation) when there is a discrepancy.

We will be taking you down to the auditorium for school pictures Thursday and Friday during English class. (Ugghhh!)  Anyway, if you need a form to purchase photos, check on the shelf by the door (under your phone chart).

Periods 3 & 5 (all other classes, hold off on this until we format your class tomorrow):  You need to do your pre-test for Reading Plus :)  If you have trouble entering Reading Plus through your student portal, click here and enter hia117 as the site code. (Scroll down to Rodriguez and your period, click on it, then enter your your student ID as your password.

Don't forget to read the chapter(s) for your respective novels.  Period 3, you have your bookmark already (it's not due until next week, but start it now).  Period 5, you are going to create your own BOOKMARK for Chapter Three using your vocab words (it needs to be in the shape of a bookmark).  You will describe a character, his/her actions, or an event while using your vocab words.   Use 15 words total: ten from Unit 2, three words from Unit 1, and two words from the summer words (always underline the vocab words in your sentences).

Here is an example: Bayardo's derision towards Angela may stem from two forces: her unconscionable act or the major blow to his ego.

I know I used two words in that sentence, but you would only need to include one per sentence.  (I wasn't trying to show off, I promise.  It just worked out that way. How about this? If you can work in two words into one sentence, we'll be OK with it.  Just be sure you use the words properly and provide enough context for us to know that you know what the words mean.  Gosh, I love compromise!)

Love you all!

HW-All Classes

All Classes: Your vocab journals should have your words and definitions for Units 1 and 2.  BRING YOUR JOURNALS TO CLASS DAILY :)   EL should also have their summer words in there.  Being the loving and caring teachers we are, we are letting you know that there will be some type of pop-quiz this week on your words and/or a journal check.  You will be able to use your journals for your pop-quizzes, which is why you need to bringing them daily...not just this week, but ALL weeks!

We also encourage you to share your comments, findings, and/or questions about your novels.  We will create two threads under the Comments link below.  Reply to your respective novel :)

General Paper:  You are reading Chapters 1-4 of Breaking Dawn, annotating in the margins of your book (or on post-it notes), and completing your bookmark.  Be prepared for an assessment on Tuesday/Wednesday.

English Language:  You are reading Chapter 2 of Chronicle of a Death Foretold.  You do not have a bookmark, but you should be annotating in the margins (or on post-it notes).  You will have an assessment on Chapters 1 & 2 Tuesday/Wednesday.

I've been reading this morning, and I (C-Rod) am getting my characters all mixed up.  I plan on making a chart to show the characters and their relation to each other (like we did with Breaking Dawn last year).  Once I do it, I will be more than happy to share it...so check back in this weekend if this is something that will help you.

You also have to create a vocab chart for your Unit 2 vocab.    Click on the EL VOCAB UNIT 2 link in the AICE EL column to the right of this post.   You are going to create a handwritten chart with five columns labeled: word, phonetic pronunciation (an example: fo-net-ik  pro-nun-see-ay-shun...not the way dictionaries do the pronunciation), definition, synonyms (you will need two synonyms per word), and antonym.   Create a row for each of your vocab words (you do not have to do this for the roots/prefixes).

All Classes Again:  Know that we love you and miss you already.  We're looking forward to our time in the classroom again next week.  In the meantime, read, relax, and and enjoy your families.  LOVE YOU :)

If you failed to retain a copy of our class novel, it's not too late!  Some of the area libraries still have them!  Check Destiny to see which area schools have available copies.  We want you to be ready for Thursday/Friday, so if you don't have a copy and cannot get one, here is Chronicle of a Death Foretold by chapter.  Click on the chapter links to read them.  These links will also help you should you leave your book somewhere, or you just need to see it at the click of a button (though it may take some time to download).  LOVE YOU!

For Our English Language Sweeties

All EL Classes (GP, your work is a couple posts down):  Our reading calendar is updated.  For Thurs. and Fri., you will need to read chapter one and do a bookmark.  The bookmark should be on 1/4 sheet of paper.

On the front - Include a title for the chapter, a graphic, and a rationale for the two, and your name and period.

On the back - Provide six examples of lit tools and syntactical structures from the chapter. (Mix-and-match them, maybe three of each, and please don't repeat tools or structures.) Be sure to include the name of the tool or structure, the sentence (or example), and the page number.  If the sentence (or example) is lengthy, you can use an ellipsis (...), but it must still maintain its effectiveness :)  You also need to include a tone word to describe the chapter (or a large chunk of it).  You will need to provide words, phrases or sentences from the chapter to support your choice of tone word.  Click HERE for our new list of tone words!  Print the document, use it for tonight, then put it in your binder.

This is due on Thursday for Period 5; Friday is the due date for Periods 2 & 6.

We also need some help from our juniors to get our room ready for Open House.  If you can stay after school tomorrow, we could use a few helpers :)

LOVE YOU :)

JUNIORS

Tomorrow is Patriot Day, so if you have your red bandanna strip from last year, wear it in honor of Welles Crowther.  :)

We think we told 5th to be ready for the vocab test.  Please let us know if we were mistaken.  :)    If not, be ready!

Periods 3 & 4 HW

Period 3 - BREATHE!  This is not for you...YET.  After we meet Tuesday, what Period 4 is doing tonight, will be your HW.  For tonight, all you have to do is study, study, study.

Period 4 - Click on the GP VOCAB UNIT 2 link in the column to the right of this post.

You will also need to write the words and definitions in your vocab journal; be sure to include the roots and their definitions there :)

Thanks!  We love you!

Periods 3 & 4:

Homework: REVISED!!!!!!!!!!!!

Periods 2, 5, and 6:  You can find your summer vocab right under the "AICE EL Vocab Links" on the right-hand side of the blog :)  Thanks to the amazing Geosette for providing the list!  BE READY FOR NEXT WEEK'S TEST!!!!!

Period 3 (NOT Period 4): Word of the Day is being postponed until October 1st; therefore, do not worry about the assignment for tomorrow.  Instead, please create two different sentences with a different vocab word in each.  Be sure to use context clues, and please underline the vocab word. You will then label each word in the sentence based on which part of speech it is.  This is due on Friday.  Here is an example of one sentence (but you will do two):

 SMILE :)  We love you!
