HW, Homework, and AHEAD

Happy Saturday!  We miss you already!

Easy "A" Opportunity - Share your favorite Breaking Dawn or Scarlet Letter quote thus far.  Explain why you like it!  Remember, GPS (grammar, punctuation, spelling) counts for your blog posts!  Be sure to leave comments under the correct title.

Reading Plus - For ALL CLASSES, remember that we check your two sessions of Reading Plus on Tuesdays.  If you have not been doing your sessions, make up your missed sessions this weekend, and we will take away the zeros (though it will be a late grade).

Word of the Day - Our due date for your Words of the Day activity has been moved to Thursdays and Fridays.  If there's no school on those days, you will  submit your reading chart the class period before (e.g., there is no school this Friday, so our 2/4/6 students will submit it on Wednesday).  This week, we're having you do a chart on the connections you make between the article and what you've already read, observed, and experienced.  CLICK HERE TO ACCESS IT!

Vocabulary - Our English Language classes (periods 2, 5, and 6), you need to write your Unit 4 words, the parts of speech, definition and pronunciation into your journal.  All of that information is to the right.  Click on the link in your EL column: "EL Vocab Unit 4."   Our General Paper classes (periods 3 & 4), you already have your Unit 4 words in your journals (we hope),  but you need to study them.  You will have your test this Thursday and Friday, but you will need to know them for class on Monday and Tuesday :)

Homecoming - If you dress up for Homecoming (and it has to be obvious you did), stop by our room before school or between classes to get credit.  We will have checklists set up outside.  Do NOT disrupt our classes; it's only before or between classes!  The dress-up calendar link is above the Breaking Dawn movie trailer.

We'll see some of you on Sunday.  Everyone else, see you Monday or Tuesday!  LOVE YOU! :)

    1. My favorite quote from Breaking Dawn is actually a chapter title: "You Need a Brain? You Need a Heart? Go Ahead. Take Mine. Take Everything I Have." (This is also the quote on the back of my BD shirt, so no jacking it, OK?!?!)

Why it calls me is because not only does Jacob feel this way, but I do as well! I understand Jacob's frustration and also his infallible commitment. In this profession, it's about giving, giving, giving. Everyday I strive to share my brain (and its immense power - LOL) and my heart (and its love) with y'all. (Obviously, I am better some days than others, but it's still my intention EVERYDAY.) As faithful as Jacob is to Bella, I am to you. However, Jacob's statement is also laden with pain. I feel that way at times. When my students don't do their part, I feel abused in some ways. You have no idea how we teachers (especially RoGo) need to see your brains and hearts in return. It's a vital energy source! When we don't see you reach your potential, it sucks the life out of us. (See how much power you have!?!)

This quote also parallels another of my favorites from Shakespeare: "My heart is ever at your service." Again, this is said with devotion, but also with some trepidation...because there's always the possibility that someone will take advantage of your heart, your love. Be that as it may, I still give my heart freely, though it can be heartrending! Damn, it can be painful...but you're worth it :)

OK, guys and gals, LOVE YOU! Anyone who is able to identify ONE literary tool, syntactical structure, vocabulary word, OR the tone in this comment, will receive two trophies. DON'T DO ONE OF EACH, ONLY DO ONE OVERALL! Indicate the name of the device (word or structure), the example from my comment, and why you feel I used it (e.g., explain what purpose was it intending to serve). Again, only indicate one, so others will have the opportunity to respond.

    2. My favorite quote from Breaking Dawn is "you'd think I'd be used to telling you goodbye by now."

The reason why this quote calls my attention so much is because it is something that is actually true .Jacob has tried multiple times to get over Bella yet, he cannot. He has tried everything to get away from her even run away for a long time in his wolf form. Yet, his love for her always seems to come back and draw him back to her. All he wants is to see her happy and human. I think that Bella knows this love that Jake has for her and sometimes abuses it in a way. I think it is better for them both just to not see each other at all anymore until all feelings are gone.

    3. My favorite quote from Breaking Dawn would be "You nicknamed my daughter after the Loch Ness Monster?" This quote is my favorite so far because it was a very amusing part to read in chapter 22. Bella got furious with Jacob because that was when Bella first found out that Jacob had imprinted on Renesmee, and because he nicknamed her daughter Nessie.

Bella had felt that Jacob would be taking away Renesmee from her, she had even said "You're going to stay away from her." I felt that Bella felt weird of Jacob being like her son in law, and about Jacob imprinting on her daughter because Jacob is her best friend, and Renesmee is her daughter, and there is a huge age difference between them. But Jacob tried to calm Bella down because she was about to rip his head off. Bella was taking it in the wrong way also because she was seeing it as if Jacob could control who he could imprint on, but he cannot choose even if he wanted to. Especially when in the beginning of Breaking Dawn he hated Renesmee as soon as he heard about her hurting Bella on the inside.

    4. My favorite quote from Breaking Dawn is found in Chapter 2: "It made no sense when he looked at me that way. Like I was the prize rather than the outrageously lucky winner." Although this quote is said by Bella, I believe Edward feels the exact same way. They both find it implausible that they could love each other because they don't feel deserving of one another. According to Bella, in my point of view, he's God and she's his worshiper, but that's also how Edward feels and I will never stop loving that fact. Their unconditional love is beyond words and infallible. Therefore, knowing that they don't take each other for granted because they feel fortunate to obtain one another's never-ending adoration makes this my favorite quote, and will be, with no doubt, on the back of my t-shirt!

Also, I'd like to include a hyperbole I found on your comment C-Rod! You stated: "When we don't see you reach your potential, it sucks the life out of us." How exaggerated! We're not that bad, lol. I feel you used this sentence because you want to encourage us to improve and to be determined to reach our full potential. If we're good, there's still enough space for improvement, therefore you want us to know that if we do improve we will be making you proud. You decided to use a hyperbole to emphasize your point on wanting us to try harder. Thanks for the support by the way!

    5. One of my favorite quotes in Breaking Dawn is "He smiled the kind of smile that would have stopped my heart if it were still beating." which was said by Bella in Chapter 20.

It's one of my favorites because it shows how in love Bella is with Edward, and willingly went as far as becoming a vampire and risking everything to be with Edward forever. They have an unconditional love that in the end was worth all the hardships to stay together.

    6. My favorite quote is found in chapter 18, page 360. "It was the baby girl in the blond vampire's arms that held me here now. Renesmee." by Jacob.

This is my favorite quote because it's one of the most important ones, and one that will surely make a remarkable effect not only in Jacob's life, but in all of those persons that surround him. Throughout the chapters from Book 2, where Jacob narrates, I read how miserable and horrible he is feeling all the time because of the love that he has for Bella, a love that is slowly killing him in the inside, yet all that changes when he sees Renesmee's fervent side and unconsciously imprints on her. When he imprinted on Renesmee all those feelings for Bella were gone and with it all the suffering. Also, this event could be the one that seals the bound between the Cullens and The Quileute wolf pack which will ultimately bring peace and harmony to the two families.

    7. My favorite quote from breaking dawn is the wedding vow "as long as we both shall live.".

    8. My favorite quote from Breaking Dawn:

"Insanity is probably easier than sharing a pack mind. Crazy people’s voices don’t send babysitters to watch them." (Ch 4 P.61)

I choose this quote because one it has the word "insanity" in it which is the theme of my marching band show. And two I understand what it feels like to be insane. Jacob and the other werewolf's have it tough, not being able to think without someone hearing it.

    9. "I honor my pack. I do what's best for them." P. 162

This quote is basically an idea I live by. When it comes down to family, friends, and close association, I could never proceed with an action or deed which would not benefit them. I do what would be best for them because the gratification I receive from them, whether openly shared or not, is enough to to satisfy my happiness.

    10. My Favorite quote from Breaking Dawn has to be "The endless ocean of grief that waited stretched out before me." (pg. 340)

This is because I can almost feel what Jacob is describing. Stephenie Meyer's wording is so clever and I can actually imagine and put myself in Jacob's shoes. This quote can also relate to many different situations in life which for me is very important.

I chose this quote as my favorite thus far because it brings about a most morally challenging question. That in mind is the following: What would you do about your family if you were to become immortal?

Also, This is very reminiscent of an episode of the Twilight Zone, where it is discovered that one man was made immortal by an alchemist thousands of years ago, and he has since then had to bear the thought and sight of his loved ones aging as he maintained his youth over the course of time.

    13. My favorite quote from Breaking Dawn, would have to be "life sucks and then you die". said by Jacob. There is humor and truth behind this quote and that why it is my favorite. in some aspects yes life does suck and eventually you can die. The humor I find it is how Jacob is using it for something so pettie as not being able to be with Bella. This is why "life sucks and then you die" is my favorite quote in the book so far. :)

    1. My favorite quote from The Scarlet Letter is, as you well know, "let her cover the mark as she will, the pang of it will be always in her heart." VERY POWERFUL! However, for the sake of not being repetitively redundant or redundantly repetitive, here is another of my favorite (man, there are millions in that book):

“Love, whether newly born or aroused from a deathlike slumber, must always create sunshine, filling the heart so full of radiance, that it overflows upon the outward world.”

Wholeheartedly, I believe this to be the call of our lives, our reason for living, our force to move forward. When love is true, whether that's friendship or the more serious kind, it's supposed to breathe life into your soul. It makes you better!!! That is when you know love is right. If being with someone is impeding you, pushing you backward, making you question your decisions, asking you to compromise your spirit, your health, your well-being, then you know it's WRONG! (For this kind of relationship, my loves, you are "paying far too much for your whistle.")

Hawthorne also poignantly expresses that love not only makes you more radiant, but it also makes you want to shine shift that light on others around you. A true love will not only make you a better person, it will also ameliorate others outside that relationship, the people around you, even strangers. They will see your example and want to be better too. In a way, that love keeps getting "paid forward."

My beautiful babies, this quote beckons you TODAY to inventory your various relationships/friendships. If there is someone in your life asphyxiating you instead of resuscitating you, maybe you need to step back. If a love is making you somber and sinister, it's time to move toward a radiant, luminous, and beautiful light. Find your beacon, keep your eyes ever fixed on it, and you will never get lost :) And at the same time, as Hawthorne charges, be that beacon for another ship lost at sea.

OK, enough of my philosophizing!!!! Anyone who is able to identify ONE literary tool, syntactical structure, vocabulary word, OR the tone in this comment, will receive two trophies. DON'T DO ONE OF EACH, ONLY DO ONE OVERALL! KNOW I LOVE YOU NOW AND ALWAYS !!!!!
      (That's no hyperbole either.)

    2. The Vocabulary word "impede" was used as a gerund or the present continuous tense(-ing). This word is a verb and means to delay or prevent someone or something by obstructing them.
It was used in the following sentence: If being with someone is impeding you, pushing you backward, making you question your decisions, asking you to compromise your spirit, your health, your well-being, then you know it's WRONG!
The sentence also provides context clues to the word as to "pushing you backward..." etc. It was most likely used to explain how you should not allow anyone stop or delay you from doing what you feel it's best for you.

    3. Good morning with all love to all classmates with whom I have the privilege of sharing my days and to the marvelous Mrs. Rodriguez and Ms. Gonzalez! The quote that indicates asyndeton is: "If being with someone is impeding you, pushing you backward, making you question your decisions, asking you to compromise your spirit, your health, your well-being, then you know it's WRONG!" You used this to significantly emphasize that if a relationship of any type is causing you spiritual and physical decay, then it is not worth it and therefore should be discarded from your life. Definitely legitimate! ;) Go ROGO!

Furthermore, a quote that really caused contemplation in my state of mind was this one: "Alone in the world, cast off by it, and with this sole treasure to keep her heart alive, she felt she possessed indefeasible rights against the world, and was ready to defend them to death." As formidable human beings, (I promise I do not just use words to show off or to throw it out there, it has become SECOND NATURE! I love vocabulary!) we need to make conviction defense a part of our quotidian demeanor! It imperative to express ourselves and stand firm in what we believe is morally right when deep down you know it is. Of course, speaking the truth may awaken the ambiance of opposition and calamity trying to degrade your spirit, but that is when we most should seek strength and authority disregarding what others may think! My personal well from which I withdraw water in times of drought is Jesus Christ. (Apologies to those who don't share the faith, I do not force it upon you, but I do share because He is my life). He is what keeps my heart alive, and as the quote states I am ready to contend till death for Him! Glory and honor be to God! So whatever it is you believe to be right make sure you take your stand: if it is being responsible, truthful, doing what is just and being who YOU are, do not let peer pressure or critics or ANYTHING bring you down from fulfilling your mission!

      With lots of fraternal love,

    4. My favorite quote from The Scarlet Letter is, without a doubt, “Mother,” said little Pearl, “the sunshine does not love you. It runs away and hides itself, because it is afraid of something on your bosom. . . . It will not flee from me, for I wear nothing on my bosom yet!” This quote perfectly describes the role of Pearl in the text! It also shows the importance of the scarlet letter as a symbol and the connection between the quality of being a human and sin. Which is one of the novel's most important themes.

Pearl is almost all the time aware things that others don't see. She perfectly fits into the word precocious. In the quote that I mentioned she basically identifies her moms bosom with the obvious lack of sunshine in her mothers life. To conclude, I really like this quote because it perfectly demonstrates who Pearl is and her importance in the novel.

    5. My favorite quote from the Scarlet Letter had to have been "If she be all tenderness, she will die. If she survive, the tenderness will either be crushed out of her, or -and the outward semblance is the same- crushed so deeply into her heart that it can never show itself more." This quote represented the effect of severe experience for a woman, though I took it into more general terms rather than only females, and I found it to be right on point.Depending on how the person were to deal with any severe situation in general, either they lose a part of themselves in the process or become stronger in a sense that they gain off of the experience. It came to show, that Hester's way of dealing with her embroidered "A" allowed her to become as independent, kind, and brilliant as she was in chapter after the entire ordeal.-Pd 6

    6. "That old man's revenge has been blacker than my sin. He has violated, in cold blood, the sanctity of a human heart."

Dimmesdale is telling Hester that they are not the greatest sinners. Chillingworth has committed a sin that is greater than Hester and Dimmesdale's crimes combined. His fault is greater than any crime a man can commit. Dimmesdale is saying that violating human morals-- the human heart-- is the greatest crime a man achieve.

I feel that this may be reassuring to Hester and Dimmesdale. God will not see their iniquities as significant as Chillingworth's. The duo may take comfort in the fact that God will not judge them as harshly as Chillingworth.

Ameliorate means to alleviate or make something better. This sentence is explaining that love is contagious. It is saying that love improves lives around us.

    8. I was assigned with Chapters 1-3 of the Scarlet Letter. My favorite quote within these chapters is: "This woman has brought shame upon us all, and ought to die; is there no law for it? "
I emphasize this quote because it gives a clear understanding of how the townspeople were malevolent towards Hester's iniquity. Even though it's not a quote I were to say myself nor represent the placidity of the novel, it made it less abstruse for me to comprehend both the community's anger and Hester's abashment. It is clearly shown how the people wanted the worst for her, not just the scarlet letter attached to her body but her life taken away.

    9. I was assigned the last two chapters of The Scarlet Letter; chapters 23 and 24.

One (of many) of my favorite quotes from The Scarlet Letter would have to be:

"How fared it with him, then? Were there not the brilliant particles of a halo in the air about his head? So etherealised by spirit as he was, and so apotheosised by worshipping admirers, did his footsteps, in the procession, really tread upon the dust of earth?"

Dimmesdale has completed his sermon or speech and left his spectators, followers, and worshipers completely and utterly awestruck. The townspeople are so taken by Dimmesdale's words; they hold him so highly in thought, it almost seems to be an exaggeration. They make him seem unearthly and divine with pure admiration, as if he wouldn't even walk on the ground for he was too angelic, with even a halo seemingly above his head.

I like how this quote is like a climax, because what follows a little afterwards is Dimmesdale's confession, which then makes him a very contradicting figure. It shows that even those who are thought and/or seen to be angels if you will, can just as easily sin as the next person.

    10. I was actually intrigued by two quotes from chapters 4 & 5.
      For chapter 4, the quote:
"No matter whether of love or hate: no matter whether of right or wrong! Thou thine, Hester Prynne, belong to me." (Roger Chillingworth)
I like this quote because, Chillingworth is telling Hester that even if she committed adultery while he was away, she will always be his. Whether he loves her or not, or if she did something wrong or right, she is marked by him. I think this quote degrades women overall because it makes us sound as if we are a piece of property. No women should be marked and stamped by anyone, they are their own person, and no one has the right to choose what is right or wrong for them. Chillinworth should back off and realize that Hester has the right to choose when and who to love, no matter what other people think.

      The second quote (Chapter 5):
"And we must needs say it seared Hester's bosom so deeply, that perhaps there was more truth in the rumour than our modern incredulity may be inclined to admit."
I like this quote because it represents how maybe Hester was as guilty as she was set out to be. That maybe there is more truth to a rumor than what people are willing to accept. The word "seared" represents the A (her sign) on her breast (bosom), the quote says that maybe it was sewed on so strong and deep that it was true. That maybe there was no other truth to that story but that she is indeed an adulterer and must pay for her iniquity.

"Not the less, however, though with a tremulous enjoyment , did he feel the occasional relief of looking at the universe through the medium of another kind of intellect than than those with which he habitually held converse"
I really liked this quote that i found from chapter IX because it makes me think about if everyone possessed this kind of mind set where they want to see a different viewpoint on something and not be close minded and not so into their own ways of thinking all the time. Imagine if everyone in the world though this way than criminals would probably have more empathy towards someone they are harming and rethink their own way of doing things.

    12. My favorite quote in The Scarlet Letter is "Love, whether newly-born, or aroused from a death-like slumber, must always create a sunshine, filling the heart so full of radiance, that it overflows upon the outward world." Everyone can relate to this quote, this quote represents real love. Love is tender and it should never cause pain, it should create joy like no other. It represents how pure and how blissful love should be. Hester's love for Dimmesdale was so powerful that she took the blame for her "adultery". Dimmesdale also shared the same pain; witnessing the derision the townspeople inflicted on her. Their love was so grand that they were both willing to protect each other. Even though their love was meant to be kept hidden, that love was still there and has stayed there for 7 years. I believe this quote represents to me, that even though there are hardships in life or even in marriage that at the end of the day that love will always shine.

The Scarlet Letter; Chapter 2 - The Market Place

My favorite quote from The Scarlet Letter is "Let her cover the mark as she will, the pang of it will always be in her heart". This quote is my favorite because I feel that I can really relate to it. In life, we all have made bad decisions and choices that drastically changed our lives someway, somehow. The people around us judge and view us differently and we ourselves, start looking down on us and begin to lose faith in ourselves and feel that life will never be "normal" again. My point with all this is that no matter how much we turn our lives around or change how we deal with situations, what we did wrong is always going to be there, haunting us for the rest of our lives. We ourselves can never forget and the people around: the ones we love and don't really like that much, won't either. We can cover our marks (bad decisions, mistakes, errors, etc.) in all the ways possible, but the pang (the pain and the suffering you experienced) will always be in our thoughts. The good thing about all this is that we can take our sufferings and bad decisions and use them for a good cause... to learn how to become a better person! Because believe it or not, if we didn't make mistakes in life, how would we learn to do what's right? And most importantly, how would we have become the person we are today? Food for thought... Hope this is good enough! :)

    14. Hello!!!
My favorite quote from the Scarlet Letter is actually a question from Governor Bellingham to Mr. Wilson.
-"What little bird of the scarlet plumage may this be?"

This quote is really important to me because it helps me realize how cynical, ironic, and sarcastic were all the comments that Governor Bellingham directed towards the innocent Pearl. Somehow, it also helps me understand how badly were treated Hester and her daughter, how finger-pointed they were everywhere they went. It makes me ponder what would I do if I were in their shoes, I seriously think that I wouldn't be able to handle it. This marks of dishonor (stigma, ignominy) will always be glued not only on their clothes, but in their hearts.

      Recognizing from the excerpt:
-Hyperbole: When love is true, whether that's friendship or the more serious kind, it's supposed to breathe life into your soul.

Mrs. C-Rod used this Literary Device in her writing to inform the reader the truth about love. She also uses this phrase to support the idea that love that is not pure, real, or true will drag us backward and we should let go of it because love is suppoused to bring us joy and happiness into our lives.

    15. One of the favorable quotes that I have chosen from The Scarlett Letter is from Chapter V. HESTER AT HER NEEDLE : "Tomorrow would bring its own trial with it; so would the next day, and so would the next: each its own trial, and yet the very same that was now so unutterably grievous to be borne." I had chosen this quote because its just a general sentence which foretells Hester's future from now on. It may also be quite relatable to anyone. This statement is simple yet goes into depth with a powerful message. Each day has its own trial, leading onto another one as the sun rises. We all have to face these trails as life continues.

    16. My favorite quote from The Scarlet Letter is from chapter #2. It reads, "let her cover the mark as she will, the pang of it will be always in her heart." That quote is extremely empowering and something we can all relate to. Take when we did our letters of what we we ashamed of, for example. Sure, it's in the past, and we grow and learn from it, but we will always remember with regret and remorse the act we committed. In Hester's case, it's worse- she deals with the emotional pain and the physical reminder that is her daughter.

    17. My favorite quote from The Scarlet Letter is, "We have yet to learn again the forgotten act of gaiety." Hawthorne refers to the manner in which the townspeople portray the Puritan religion-- mundane and dark; they have abandoned the joy behind religion. To me, this quote applies to today's society as well, because we tend to conform to our routines day in day out, and we forget the mirth that comes with life.

A literary device you used was personification in this sentence: And at the same time, as Hawthorne charges, be that beacon for another ship lost at sea.
You suggested that we, or "that beacon", spread our love to people around us to help them want to be a loving, kind and better person. Others being "another ship lost at sea." :)

I feel this quote is very touching for the reasoning being that it’s showing forgiveness. Forgiveness in the sense that even though he had the easy way through all the hardship she was going through, She still loved him enough to feel that he should be part of their lives. It also highlights how important family really is, and how one should stop at nothing to protect that bond they share with each other.

    2. My favorite quotes from the Scarlett Letter is in the second chapter the author says, "In a moment, however, wisely judging that one token of her shame would but poorly serve to hide another, she took the baby on her arms, and with a buringin blush." I like this quote very much because of it's pure irony. Just like Hester Prynne trying to hide something from the crowd, I think we as human beings have our own secrets to hide from others, However, in her case it's shown to everyone in town when in reality she's not the only one who has something to hide. It reminds me a lot of our letter assignment from last friday.

  9. My favorite quote from Breaking Dawn would definitely be "Edward. My life and his were twisted into a single strand. Cut one, and you cut both. If he were gone, I would not be able to live through that. If I were gone, he wouldn't live through it, either. And a world without Edward seemed completely pointless. Edward had to exist."
    - Bella Cullen

This quote is my favorite, because it shows a lot of feelings between the characters of Bella and Edward. This quote describes Edward and Bella's beautiful relationship, it shows how they desperately need each other, and that's how love should be. A formidable love. If one of them couldn't breathe, the other wouldn't even bother to try.

  10. My favorite quote from The Scarlet Letter is "she could no longer borrow from the future to ease her present grief" I like this quote because it shows how the author conveys the fact that the protagonist no longer has anything to look forward to in the future, therefore she can not diminish the grief of the present. And it's sad to think that someone does it have anything to look forward to anymore.

  11. One of my favorite quotes from The Scarlet Letter was "ah, but let her cover the mark as she will, the pang of it will be always in her heart" because it means that no matter how hard she tries to conceal the "A", the painful emotions that she's feeling will never truly go away. Hester will have to face judgment and ridicule with or without the mark.

This is my favorite quote because of it's 100% irony. Just like Hester Prynne trying to conceale something from the crowd, she has something to hide from the society she is in but it is being published on a daily basis and it shows we all have our secrets .

  13. My favorite quote from the Scarlet Letter was, "If she be all tenderness, she will die. If she survive, the tenderness will either be crushed out of her, or -and the outward semblance is the same- crushed so deeply into her heart that it can never show itself more." This is my favorite quote because the quote speaks truth to me, as through many times in life the only way to deal with situations that are being dealt to you is to lose that softness, or sensitivity, and grow more resilient whether it be physically or emotionally.

  14. My favorite quote from the Scarlet Letter was, "Trusting no man as his friend, he could not recognize his enemy when the latter actually appeared." This is my favorite quote because it explains why Mr. Dimmesdale is unable to see Roger Chillingworth's character more clearly because he has become suspicious of the whole world. In other words, because he trusted no man as his friend, he could not recognize a real enemy when one actually appeared. The author is trying to say that sick hearts are prone to paranoia and it can often backfire because if you can't trust anyone you have no way of recognizing your enemies and your friends(keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.).

One of the many literary tools you used in your post was Allusion, you emphasized your point by referring to Benjamin Franklin's parable The Whistle, in which he explains when some things are just too costly. You used it in this form: (For this kind of relationship, my loves, you are "paying far too much for your whistle.") perhaps trying to tell us that relationships can be too costly when you have feelings for someone that doesn't share the same feelings with you and you strive to keep that person happy, when in reality they are holding you back and you are giving up more than what that person is worth to you.

  15. My favorite quote in the Scarlet Letter was, "Her Pearl—for so had Hester called her; not as a name expressive of her aspect, which had nothing of the calm, white, unimpassioned lustre that would be indicated by the comparison. But she named the infant 'Pearl,' as being of great price—purchased with all she had—her mother's only treasure!" I like this quote very much because the author is saying how "expensive" Pearl was. Not expensive as in money, but expensive as in what her mother had to go through because of her. Not only did Hester have to wear an "A" on her chest all the time, Pearl was also her other "A" which would forever remind her mother of the adultery that she did. I'm sure some of us have our own "expensive Pearl" which will be carried along with us for the rest of our lives.

  16. "He knew, by some spiritual sense--for the Creator never made another being so sensitive as this-- he knew that no friendly hand was pulling at his heartstrings, and that an eye was looking curiously into him, sought only evil, and found it."
This quote stood out to me and I liked it quite a lot because it is true. No matter how sensitive a person is, it doesnt mean that somewhere inside them, they don't have an evil side. What is also true about is that, nowadays, people don't really look for the what people have done good. They look for what they have done that is bad. People don't really pay attention to successes that a person has had in their life but, even if it was just once that they did something evil, people notice and some will just not let you forget it and that is why this quote stood out to me. They eye looking into his was just looking for evil. It didn't pay any mind to what good he could've done in the past.

  17. In Breaking Dawn, my favorite quote is when Bella goes "Huh. I can see what everyone's been going on about. You stink, Jacob" and Jacob just keeps joking around with her. I like this quote because, even though she's a vampire now, their relationship remained intact and he doesn't see her as the enemy now.

  18. "It lies not in the pleasure of the magistrates to take off this badge....Were I worthy to be quit of it, it would fall away of its own nature, or be transformed into something that should speak a different purport."

Here in this quote, Hester is struggling on whether or not to take her letter off or not. This letter labels her very existence, no matter who the person is, everyone will see her as what the letter signifies her as. This quote is her doubting herself on the sin, is she really worthy to have the letter taken off? If she was, it would have not been on her, and the letter would have been "transformed" into a different reason. Maybe something not as big as the sin she had committed.

  20. My favorite quote from Breaking Dawn is "My relationship with Jacob used to be so easy. Natural as breathing. But since Edward had come back into my life, it was a constant strain. Because – in Jacob’s eyes – by choosing Edward, I was choosing a fate that was worse than death, or at least equivalent to it."

I like this quote from the book because is shows that Bella does actually care about her relationship with Jacob. Bella doesn't understand why Jacob thinks that about her life with Edward.

  22. My favorite quote thus far in Breaking Dawn is

"No measure of time with you will be long enough but lets start with forever"

I am going to sound so corny, but I choose it because I can relate to this quote. I know what it feels like to want to be with someone for such a long time that not even eternity is enough to describe those feelings.

  23. "owing this dreary resemblance to the fact that Hester was actually dead, in respect to any claim of sympathy, and had departed out of the world with which she still seemed to mingle"

I like this quote, and the reason being that she has become desensitized. The world around her has torn at her and left scars, scars that have damaged the nerves leaving her unable to truly feel sympathy and another way I interpret this is that she is a pariah now. She has committed a stigma that has deemed her an outcast.

  24. My preferred moment in the book so far is in Jacobs book (book 2)Chapter 18 page 352. In this part of the book Bella is giving birth and its when her spine cracked, her eyes began to blinking, rolling blindly. Then, Jacob began to yell at Bella to stay with him and keep her heart beating as she looked for him or Edward (as Jacob described in the book)until Renesmee popped out of her. This part is one of my favorites because it showed how much Jacob cares about Bella also as I read the book this part kept my eyes glued to the page until the climax had finished. Also, TEAM JACOB all the way!

  25. The quote that caught my attention the most in The Scarlett Letter was "A pure hand needs no glove to cover it!" Said by the Sexton in chapter 12.
This particular quote appealed to me because it seemed pretty ironic to me that the minister, who was seen as such a pure and noble man, was quite the opposite. This quote in simpler terms states that a good man has nothing to hide from others, but in all honesty, is there really any pure people in this world? We are human. Whether you are a criminal, a priest,or a common citizen, if you were to say you've never made a mistake in your life or done anything wrong then you are lying. This quote intrigued me because it made me think about how there are no pure people in our universe. We make our mistakes and we all hide some secrets, and that is okay because we are human. No one has a right to judge someone else when they too commit sins.

  26. The quote that intrigued me most was when Pearl kept on asking her mother "What does the letter mean, mother? and why dost thou wear it? and why does the minister keep his hand over his heart?" Pearl made the letter A with seaweed and put it on her bosom. Pearl wondered if her mother would ask her what the letter meant. When Hester found Pearl wearing the letter she asked if she truly knew what the letter meant. Pearl told her mother that she did and that it was for the same reason the minister keeps his hand over his heart. Pearl was consistent on asking her mother the same question. The question was asked 3-4 times. Was it to prove a point, to scintillate reality, or does it highlight a past/future event?

  27. Quote: "After putting her finger in her mouth, with many ungracious refusals to answer good Mr. Wilson's questions, the child finally announced that she had not been made at all, but had been plucked by her mother off the bush of wild roses that grew by the prison-door." Chapter 8, pg. 103

Pearl never takes any question seriously, but here, she is trying to protect her mother. She is being very aggressive to other people for she knows that her mother loves her deeply even though she is the birth of a wrong-doing.

  28. My favorite quote from Breaking Dawn this far has been:
"I could remember why I shouldn't scream. I could remember the reason why I'd committed to enduring this unendurable agony. I could remember that, though it felt impossible now, there was something that might be worth the torture."

This has been my favorite quote so far because it demonstrates Bella's resolve to live to see Renesmee. Bella's love for Renesmee is what drives her through the burning pain and agony. Regardless of the love Bella feels toward Jacob or Edward, it was the love she felted toward Renesmee that gave the will to bear through the pain. This comes to show the power of a mother's love toward her little nudger.

  31. The quote that has thus far been my favorite from the book The Scarlet Letter is "Woman, it is thy badge of shame!" (Chapter VIII)

This relates to many cases in life where you want to say something, but you refuse because you know that you've done it yourself. I like it because it reminded me of The Scarlet Letter assignment where we had to wear our letter for a day. Which in the end made me understand, not fully but partially, of what Hester's experience was like.

  32. "Even you, Jacob Black, cannot hate me as much as I hate myself" -EDWARD

This has to be one of my favorite quotes because this is one of those moments that Edward expresses how much he cares about Bella. Since Edward impregnated Bella, he knows that there is vampire life inside of her, and she could be killed because of how the baby is literally sucking the life out of Bella. Jacob, being the one with the most animosity towards Edward, hates Edward for having an affair with Bella because he could've hurt her, and that couldn't compare to the hate that Edward had casted upon himself because he could kill Bella by impregnating her with the vampire baby, and this shows that Edward, being the man in this situation, puts the blame on himself and shows that he would do anything to save his love, Bella.

  33. The Scarlet Letter: "And as for the letter, I wear it for the sake of the thread." This is my favorite quote because I feel that in effort to preserve her child's innocence she actually was able to escape her pain through this excuse. The way she pimped-out her letter made her seem strong and careless. A true woman. I think the way she shrugged off every judgmental person and decided to do her own thing was extremely impressive.

    Extra Credit:
Asyndaton- the exclusion of conjunctions in a sentence. "In this profession, it's all about giving, giving, giving." The purpose of this was to make the act of giving seem repetitive. Conjunctions add a pause between ideas changing the focus. Omitting the conjunctions adds emphasis to the subject/object.

Soooo I typed all of the following and then realized that you said the extra credit had to be from your comment, not the actual post -.- I still included it because, if I didn't, I would've typed it for nothing. lol

Allusion- a reference to famous piece of work
Using the title "Easy "A" Opportunity" was an allusion to the Scarlet Letter. I believe the purpose was to tie in this assignment to the book we are currently reading and to emphasis the importance of the "A" not only in Hester's life but in ours (in reference to our grades). The word easy can also be considered a pun because the assignment is a quick and simple way to boost up or grade, but also describes what many people thought of Hester due to her "A." A pun is a play on words. This literary tool serves the purpose of adding a somewhat witty feeling to the title.

  34. My favorite quote from the scarlet letter is "The scarlet letter was her passport into regions where other women dared not tread. Shame, Despair, Solitude! These had been her teachers,—stern and wild ones,—and they had made her strong, but taught her much amiss."

The reason I love this quote so much is because it makes her so different from everybody else. Moreover, it resembles everything she has had to go through wearing that letter; All the criticism, and the embarrassment she has felt that has been so deep as to drown in her own tears. Apart from all the shameful horrid days that have gone by with that "A", it has made her stronger and helped her surpass most of her difficulties. Her attitude is much stronger and she has learned to live with whatever goes her way. I love the metaphor "The scarlet letter was her passport into regions where other women dared not tread". It shows that she is one of the very few who have experienced such an experience that no other woman can compare to. She did things that women wouldn't do in their entire lives, never less attempt. Although she has learned a lot, and is now stronger, she was just the opposite at first but strived to become the person she is with the scarlet letter.

  35. I'd have to say that I'm most fond of is when the reverend says: "let her cover the mark as she will, the pang of it will be be always in her heart"

It basically means, that she can hide the letter all she wants but it's still not going to go away. It's still going to weigh in her heart, and she is going to continue being reminded of it everyday. It's true for almost anyone whether or not they wear a letter; They have themselves or others(in the story its the daughter) reminding themselves everyday, the flaw looming over them.

My favorite quote in Breaking Dawn, thus far, would have to be "Life sucks and then you die, yeah I should be so lucky." because when I first read Breaking Dawn, I remember laughing my heart out when reading that sentence. And I used to be sort of pessimistic (not that I'm not still a little pessimistic, haha)like Jacob can be at times and I like holding that similarity with a character like Jacob, it sort of humanizes him (no pun intended).

  39. My favorite quote from The Scarlet Letter thus far has to be "She had not known the weight until she felt the freedom." Which is in Chapter XVIII. This is sort of likwhere in The Art Of Racing In The Rain they talk about smelling the roast and feasting if she would have never smelled the roast she would have not had the desire to feast. If Hester would have never felt the freedom then she would not have known the weight that the letter put on her. For example If i would have never had someone care so much as YOU did and do then i would really have an idea how badly I am hurting you and myself even without trying. I would not feel as I do now, then again I would much rather know what I did and get this oppourtunity to fix and correct it to the highest point possible.

  40. Within my assigned chapters (19 and 20) my favorite quote from The Scarlet Letter is found in chapter 19: " I have a strange fancy," observed the sensitive minister, " that this brook is the boundary between two worlds, and thou canst never meet they Pearl again."

I find it really interesting how he said this because the fact that both Hester and Pearl were standing alone on opposite ends of the brook, is really a metaphor. It represents both sides of the story, both opinions. On one end, it shows how Pearl is disgusted by her mother. She wants Hester to put the letter back on. Pearl is this embodiment of the disgrace Hester had to face. Pearl feels that it's her mother's fault for having been ridiculed and hated on all her life. Hester's side of the story, or other end of the brook, represents how horrible she felt when she was treated poorly because she couldn't hide her "sin", because she was pregnant. Hello, obviously everyone noticed. She had to live with not being able to keep her shame to herself like everyone else in the town. When he says that " thou canst never meet thy Pearl again", I feel like they are never going to understand each other's feelings and views on the suffering they experienced in the town.

I must consider that I haven't read the Scarlet Letter thoroughly but from what I have read I would say my favorite quote is “Her sex, her youth, and the whole richness of her beauty, came back from what men call the irrevocable past, and clustered themselves with her maiden hope, and a happiness before unknown, within the magic circle of this hour.” I truly adore this quote because it just goes to show that one can always rectify their mistakes and that nothing at all last forever. After Hester released herself from her weight she found once again the aspects of herself that by common thought seemed impossible to recover. She found in herself a glow that had died on the day of condemn for this reason I really truly love this quote.

  43. Chapter 19 in Breaking Dawn is titled "Burning". On page 377 Bella says something which i consider to be my favorite quote "If i couldn't scream, how would i tell them to kill me?" Out of all the moments in the book, by far this has to be my favorite. This line is a basic a explanation of the title for chapter 19 in brief words. During many chapters we know Bella is going through a lot of pain and difficulties but it isn't until that moment in time that she is completely hit by the reality of well, everything. The pain that Edward feels, the frustration Jacob constantly lives in, Renesmee, her changing, it was all then and there that it impacted her in every way possible. The suffering of what seemed to be everything in her world was now on her shoulders. Now it was her who had to endure it all.

This quote is my favorite because it shows how at first something can be amazing, but in reality it can be an abomination. I say this because if you are eighteen forever you will at first be happy that you will never age and live forever, but in the long run you suffer mentally because all your mortal loved ones you had will die and you have to feel the pain of losing them forever.

This quote to me has been the most outstanding because it shows how much Edward and Jacob love Bella and don't want her to suffer. Also it shows the decision that Bella is making and he sacrific. In addition, she is even risking her life with the baby because no human have been able to take out a half human and vampire baby. However the baby inside of Bella is part of Edward, he still wants her to take out the baby for it won't hurt her. Further more, this quote relates to real life because tons of girls now in days are getting pregnant and are having the pressure to decide if they want the baby or don't. There having the baby as a mistake just like it happened to Bella and some people are saying to have when others are saying not to have it.
