WHAT'S HAPPENING THIS WEEK & WEEKEND - UPDATED

Hola!  Here is what's happening this week on the RoGo Racetrack:

Vocab Tests - Periods 3 & 4, yours is this week (Thursday and Friday).  Periods 2, 5, and 6, yours is Wednesday and Thursday of next week. Study all three units for Monday and Tuesday, as you will have a fun activity to review all the words.   ALL CLASSES, you have a vocab review under your section on the right-hand side of the blog.   You can use the flashcards, play the matching or concentration games to review the words and their meanings; however, the word search will help with your spelling :)  (Periods 3 & 4, we posted 4th period's vocabulary graphics for you to review as well.)

ReadingsPeriod 3, you have to read Chapters 16-18 for tomorrow; Period 4, you don't have any reading for Friday (as indicated on the calendar).  Period 5, you have to read the first half of your SL chapters; Period 2, you should have been finished already; Period 6, you should be reading the second half of your chapters.

Assignments - Periods 3 & 4, your HW for Monday or Tuesday is to write down the new vocab words in your vocab journals.  The link is to the right :) Periods 2 and 6, you will be creating your own "scarlet letter."  Remember when we had you think about what you're most ashamed?  Well, you're going to create a label (about the size of a sheet of paper) with that letter to wear on your shirt Friday.  Decorate it accordingly, and if you want to convert your choice into Spanish and use a Spanish letter, you can.  You will wear your letter all day, and you reflect about this experience before you step into school (create a hypothesis), as well as how your day went and how you were treated.  How you apply it to your shirt is up to you. You can hang it around your neck with yarn or string, or you can pin it to your shirt.  Period 5, you will do this for Monday :)

ALL CLASSES: Remember your Reading Plus and your Words of the Day :)

    2. Hii! Well I think that making parodies for this book will be super fun. This novel has a very serious, sad, depressing tone overall. I think that making videos as groups and personalizing them will help us remember the chapters better. I love having a good laugh once in a while and I really think this is a good way to go. We are always caught up with serious class work and assignments and THIS is the time to spice it up a notch! :D

    3. I was actually into the idea of a puppet show. Not only is it simple and adorable, but it will make for a more cohesive overall class video of the book if we use the same puppets all around. A good handful of people tend to be camera shy, so for them to be obliged to perform in front of a camera, it puts pressure. Even though the idea of using the same puppets sounds arid, remember that it's different people for each chapter, so everyone can add their own little voices and personalities to the characters. It's also a chance to get creative with the different story settings. :) (plus, we've never done a puppet show before, so it will be something new to try!)

    4. I concur with Shirley. A puppet show is a rather novel way to tell a story and though it is unconventional, it can be effective in portraying the very essence of The Scarlet Letter. In addition, a puppet show, because it is so simplistic in nature, would require a true understanding of The Scarlet Letter and it's underlying themes in order to clearly convey what is going on in the story. As Shirley said, overall, it's a great chance for showcasing an individual's creativity in a new way :)

    5. I think that we should do the puppet show because that way we can present any setting on the novel, the characters will be the same throughout, and it will be very fun to watch how people manipulate the puppets. :)

    6. I agree that a puppet show would work best, it will allow everyone to act out their assigned chapters without any confusion on the characters, which was an issue we discussed in class.

    7. I think the puppet show is the best idea because of everything that my classmates have already stated. We can portray all the different scenes that are presented in our chapters and have constant characters but with different people behind them. I think everyone will be able to grasp the concept and it'll be a good experience.

    8. Maribel & Gretter

We think that a TV channel (or just a specific show) will be the best option. This option will provide students with a chance to do what they want while having fun with it. Every group can modify lyrics or create new ones to encompass their chapters. According to their genre and what not, students would be able to create a music video to narrate the chapters and to represent their style; also, they can have a parody, a puppet show, and many other fun and entertaining ideas. This would all be part of one show.

    9. I also think that the puppet show is the most feasible option for our class. It is not only a cute way to represent the novel, but an efficient method to reach that cohesive representation. The puppet show idea increases opportunities for collaboration and simplicity throughout the process.

    1. Chapters 8-9:
In chapter 8, Bellingham, Wilson, Dimmesdale, and Chillingworth came across Pearl and Hester. Bellingham began to judge Hester by mentioning how colorful her letter is, and with that, he began to tell her that he had no choice but to take Pearl from Hester's custody because she was considered irresponsible. Hester poured out all of her feelings that she has for Pearl and tried to reason with the Governor, but it couldn't match to the Governor's authority. When it seemed like there was no hope for Pearl, Dimmesdale jumped in and convinced the Governor to give her a chance and just to keep her under watch. In this chapter, a lot of love and you can tell that Hester truly loves her child. One piece of magical realism is when the author mentions that Dimmesdale's voice was so powerful that it re-echoed and the hollow armor rang with it.
In Chapter 9, It explains how Hester's estranged husband has gone into hiding so he won't have to face hummiliation. Also, Dimmesdale becomes very pale and sick in this chapter, and was being very stubborn about taking medication. The tone is filled with melancoly and the feeling of sickness as the chapter explained the reverend's suffering. One piece of magical realism is when the heavens dropped a doctor of physic from a German university, right in front of the reverend's door.

    2. Chapters 21-22
In the beginning of chapter 21, the setting takes place in the marketplace with a gathering of people celebrating the integration of the new governor. In the marketplace Hester and Dimmesdale wait for a boat to take them to Europe, when suddenly a sailor reveals that Chillingworth asked to be joining them on their journey to Europe.
In Chapter 22, we see how Pearl questions why the minister doesn't greet them in public, yet greets them in the forest where no one is around.Mistress Hibbins begins to talk to Hester about Dimmesdale, and invites Pearl to a witch craft activity, since she believes she is the child of the devil. Pearl later returns to her mother after speaking to the ship master who gave her a message.

    3. Chapters 1-3
From the beginning the author describes the town as a very bleak, pale, and boring town, although there is a rose bush in the town's entrance. In chapter 2 it begins with a group of people in front of the town jail waiting for Ester Prynne to come out. Many of them comment on the punishment given to her by the magistrate. Some of the women say its not enough to wear an A on her chest for the rest of her life but others say the opposite. Ester is described as a beautiful young woman who is skilled at sewing. HerA is too beautiful for what it represents. (Irony) They also mention how she tries to cover her A with her baby, in other words she is covering one sin with another sin. On to chapter 3 the reverend and the community members want to know the who is the baby's father but she refuses to answer that question. The reverend gives a short speech in an attempt to "convince" her to say the name, however he used sarcasm to convince her and the community otherwise. All in all , Pearl's dad remains a mystery.

    6. Chapter 12
Mr. Dimmesdale’s /Minister’s Visit to Scaffold
Goes mad with guilt for his actions and yells in agony. He decided to explain to Pearl that he will stand by her and her mother, holding their hands and standing at the scaffold in public. His cowardly ways come back, will only stand with them on Judgment Day; too ashamed of the public humility and his reputation being diminished. Meteor shower: is a sign of bad omen, gives off “Red A in the sky” ; possible symbolic of the Minister’s sin now spread for the world to see as he will never open his mouth and admit.Roger Chillingworth appears and gives Minister the “chills”, as Pearl smiles when he asks who the man is, and explains.Chillingworth and Minister walk home together
      The Next Day
The Sexton found a black gloves @ scaffold, saying it was found on the scaffold and that :” A pure hand needs no glove to cover it!”This is both ironic as the Minister agrees and yet symbolic as it was his very own glove giving away his true impure manner
      Chapter 13
Another View of Hester-Hester could sense from the Minister’s cowardly and timid manner the night before that holding in his guilt is tearing him apart from the inside out.Her embroidered letter now signified ABELholy; strong; purity.Everyone know look at her/ admire her for through her kind personality, responsibility as a mother, and strength. She seems to earn funding for food and for Pearl especially through selling her body as shown in this line: “she was quick to acknowledge her sisterhood with the race of man whenever benefits were to be conferred.” So she grabs the bull by its horns and decides to stand up to Roger the next time she sees him in order for him to stop seeking revenge on the Minister.

    7. Chapter 4- The Interview;
In this chapter Hester Prynne is in the jail cell with her baby and is found "to be in a state of nervous excitement". Roger Chillingworth (a physician) comes to talk and treat Hester and her baby. The physician provides the baby with medicine and Pearl stops crying and falls asleep. He also provides medicine for Hester, but she refuses to take it because she believes there's "death [in the] cup", yet the physician reassures her that he doesn't intend to kill her. Later in this chapter we find out that Roger Chillingworth is indeed Hester Prynne's lost husband who has come back and doesn't want anyone to know who he is (because he doesn't want to share the stigma Hester already owns). Hester promises to keep it a secret as well as she will keep the lover's name to herself. The physician tells her that he will find him, even though he won't have a sign on his chest he will be able to tell because of his heart.
Chapter 5- Hester At Her Needle
In this chapter Hester is finally brought "forth into the sunshine", yet her actual punishment has just begun. She starts thinking about how her life from now on will be like, with a never-ending amount of shame. She also thinks about how the scarlet letter would heavily affect her child's life as well. No matter what good she does she'll have to suffer being judged in a negative way. She moved to a small cottage located right outside of town, but the loneliness was all she received. Hester was well-educated. Hester spent her days sewing intricate fabrics (it was like an escape for her). She realized that the scarlet letter gave her a "new sense"; she could see hidden sins in other people. She began to feel as if there was another similar sinner nearby, a woman (she could tell from the way she looked at Hester's letter. The author mentions in the last line of the chapter that there is a possibility of being more truth in the rumor than our skepticism may want to believe.

    8. Chapter 10
Roger Chillingworth and Dimmesdale are briefly reintroduced in the beginning of this chapter, and Chillingworth's cunning ways are described. The physician brings it upon himself to enact his revenge on the young clergyman for what he had done with Hester while he was away from his home all those years ago. Dimmesdale, being unaware of this keeps on meeting with Chillingworth regularly. Eventually Chillingworth succeeds in his indirect and guilt invoking conversations and causes Dimmesdale to lose his temper and exit the room, leaving Chillingworth alone and in victory, because his plan was now coming into play.
      Chapter 11
Dimmesdale, now disheartened and extremely guilty, begins to strangle himself with his deep introspections to the point where he cannot sleep at night. He is now associating everything in his life to his shame and becomes a living contradiction; one of the most holy figures the town was now one of the biggest sinners. Although he tried to confess to the pulpit, they did not listen to his case, due to their admiration for the clergyman. This increased Dimmesdale's suffering and led to his further actions.

    9. Chapters 6-7
Chapter 6 describes Hester’s daughter Pearl. Pearl is described as a beautiful and brilliant child but at the same time is described as an “imp of evil”. Pearl, being born out of a great sin, is made an outcast in the village, the local children avoid her; similarly, Pearl does the same never attempting to make any conversation with them. Pearl is also described as short tempered, throwing stones and screaming at other children when provoked.
In Chapter 7 Hester Prynne and Pearl visit the mansion of Governor Bellingham. Hester visits the governor with the intent of delivering Governor Bellingham a pair of embroidered gloves and more importantly to ask him if the rumors of taking Pearl away from her are true. The townspeople suspect that Pearl is of “Demon Origin” and that in the best interest of her mother Pearl must be taken away from her.

    11. Chapter X (The Leech and his Patient):
Chapter 10 opens with a brief reintroduction of Roger Chillingworth and comparing the way he dug for secrets in Mr. Dimmesdale's heart to "a miner searching for gold". His suspicion of Reverend Dimmesdale is confirmed when he says to himself "This man, pure as they deem him....let us dig a little farther in the direction of his vein!". Throughout the chapter, he briefly and sometimes more directly hints that Mr. Dimmesdale shouldn't take secrets to his grave, that he should rather confess it and accept the stigma that comes along with it because it is rightfully his. A couple of days later, he catches Mr. Dimmesdale in a deep slumber and finally peeks at the Reverend's bosom and leaves joyously when he finds the gold he was looking for.

      Chapter XI:
In chapter 11, Mr. chillingworth puts his revenge plan in action and decides to become one of the closest friends of the Reverend to know each and every secret the Reverend has, for them to be revealed "to him the pitiless---to him, the unforgiving!" because he believes nothing else could so adequately pay the debt of vengeance. This chapter also states that the Reverend has tried to reveal his secret to the pulpit and in his speech he calls himself "a pollution and a lie", but is rather worshiped more for what he spoke because he never said he was an adulterer. He restlessly tries to gather the courage which he countless times failed to get to confess his sin.

    12. Chapter 17 and 18

The setting is a forest where Hester and Dimsdale meet. The tone in this scene is extremely dark and is very heavy in symbolism. The two characters seem to be unable to see each other, they are hidden in the darkness. Dimsdale epresses to Hester the loss of his faith and the torment he is going through by remaining how he is. She responds by telling him to leave and starting a new life. They continue to argue over the truths of their life and what to do and eventually Pearl comes up in the conversation and he asks if she will ever know about him. Soon thereafter, the tone changes and color is introduced and animals as well to the setting as Pearl arrives and sees Dimsdale. He later agrees to her proposal.

    1. I really like the parody movie thingy. I think it'd be pretty interesting to see what scenarios everyone comes up with. We have got some pretty crazy, creative people in our class and I agree with Janet! ( it will stick to our heads better, if it's Ina way where we can visually understand it) plus, making a movie is simple and almost free. I won't make a fuss about whatever is decided but I think the parody movie idea is absofreakinglutely awesomeeee. - Emily P.5

    2. That's true and I also think that would be a great way to express creativity among different groups because each can come up with different ideas for the parodies/mini-movies... Just my two cents...
